01/29 — Every vandweller needs a place to sleep

When last we left Our Hero, she’d just finished getting her van arranged. Needless to say, what with a trip up to Longmont to retrieve the Absolute Last of her stuff from Bri’s basement, it didn’t stay that way.

…and that’s after me and Jon pulled the waterbed headboard and ridiculous homebuilt cat tree out of the back of the van.

So that needed some work. Also I’ve been trying to get a bed built for most of the last month, except that the rechargeable battery for my drill and saw finally stopped recharging, and I assure you I wasn’t gonna cut six feet of half-inch plywood with a hand saw.

So after ordering a new battery, realizing that it charges much better when both ends of the cord are plugged into something, and waiting for the yucky weather to pass, I finally got on all that this week.

First I cut the big piece of plywood to size and pulled out the good sturdy wood screws holding the good sturdy 2×6 boards in place.

(Goes much faster this way. Also note help, to the lower left.)

Then I hadda make room for the plywood, which of course took up way more of the van than I’d thought it would, as such things inevitably do.

Much better!

The boys helped. (Yeah, Chocolate’s not wearing a harness. He was only out really briefly and then I hauled his butt back in.)

The wood needed some trimming to fit. Note my precision drafting and cutting.

There was also the matter of the corners, which were really, really sharp. I’m gonna walk into them quite enough as it is.

I added some legs.  2015-01-28 12.03.16

…and poof, it’s a bed!

Not quite. Remember the foam? Yeah, that foam.

Of course as soon as it was actually a bed I stacked it fulla things.

…but look at all the space underneath! That’s most of my show stuff, right there.

Which left plenty of room to rearrange the rest of the van — the table’s across the back now, with the chair next to it, and tents and such stacked underneath.

There’s a LOT left to do but I’m a lot closer to being able to move in and get on the road than I was.
