05/28/15 — Paint Mines Interpretive Park

Oh my freakin GOD is this place gorgeous, and it’s not a national park, not even a state park, but a county park for the County of El Paso, and the next time you’re remotely in the area, y’all gotta come out & see Paint Mines Interpretive Park.

(For those already in the area, or who’ll be around May 30th, Atlas Obscura will be holding an event that day for Obscura Day — that’s how I found out about the place.)

Anyways, with Inlandish being Memorial Day weekend and my first event of the summer season, and with Paint Mines pretty much right on the way there, I thought I’d set off a day early, wander Paint Mines some, and find a place to park for the night near site so I could be there first thing Thursday morning to set up.

I made it to Calhan midafternoon of a gloomy, cool day — kinda perfect for hiking, actually, since I tend to overheat easily. I wandered off down the trail, and I gotta admit I was pretty underwhelmed.

I eventually got to where I could see this, though. And that was kinda promising.
